The Swiss are invited to give up the plane in 2020. By a human chain on New Year’s Day at Zurich-Kloten airport, a hundred activists from the Climate Strike and Extinction Rebellion transmitted this message on the occasion of the first action carried out this year by their movements.
Despite all the climate debate that marked the past year, the use of airplanes has never reached such a level in Switzerland, the two organizations said in a statement on Wednesday. Air traffic in the country is responsible for at least a fifth of the human impact on climate change, they said.
In Zurich, the demonstrators wore masks on their mouths on which were written names of places on the planet victims of forest fires or smog. Their action, which took place peacefully, was however not authorized. It would have been provided that the number of participants does not exceed 25 individuals, note the two organizations in their joint press release.
