A first in history? The next session of the Allier Assize Court will take place in Montluçon

For those who know the rivalry between the big cities of Allier and remember the quarrels around the judicial map, the information is not lacking in irony. While the Allier Assize Court traditionally sits in Moulins, the next session will take place exceptionally at the Montluçon court, more specifically in the Robert-Badinter room.

To comply with health rules

The reason invoked by the Court of Appeal to move the Allier assize session from June 22 to July 3 in Montluçon is that its judicial tribunal makes it possible to better respect the instructions for social distancing.

“As a lawyer, I never knew that”

Has this ever happened in Montluçon’s history since the creation of the Assize Courts during the Revolution? “As a lawyer, I never knew that,” replies Maurice Brun, former mayor of Montluçon, now 94 years old. In principle, the sessions of assizes are always held at the chief town of the department except when the department has on its territory a court of appeal – like Riom in Puy-de-Dôme.

Files to be processed, compulsory mask, limited public … The Montluçon court is preparing for its deconfinement

“For those who knew the judicial map in 2007, the news is not lacking in spiciness”, underlines Joseph Roudillon, who was president of the bar when the existence of the Montluçon court was threatened.

The Montluçon courthouse benefited from two years of work, between 2016 and 2018, which allowed it to improve in particular its safety and accessibility for people with disabilities.

What business on the roll?

The Allier Assize Court will deal with four cases from June 22 to July 3, including a woman accused of violence with the use or threat of a weapon which resulted in death without the intention of giving it, a man for attempted of murder, and two others will be tried for rape.
