A degree in veterinary medicine in Ticino? “Not exactly”

An interpellation by the group Più Donne bends again on the question of self-styled universities

BELLINZONA – In Ticino we are once again talking about self-styled universities. This time for a degree course in veterinary medicine with a connection to our cantonal territory. An issue on which the Più Donne group is now questioning the Council of State.

“One wonders if the freedom of trade does not go too far in a case like this, where the public (moreover made up of young people looking for training) is induced to believe that it is a university-type training. Especially since the product offered culminates with something called a degree (in veterinary medicine, human medicine, dentistry …), using the Swiss flag and the name of the city of Lugano in the logo, and leading the public to associate Switzerland with the title of degree in question »reads the parliamentary act signed by deputies Tamara Merlo and Maristella Patuzzi.

Here are the questions to the State Council:

  1. Is he aware of the (new?) Situation of the Jean Monnet Department of European Studies, now in Lugano, and what checks he plans to carry out.
  2. Given that it cannot be called a “university” (and in fact it is called the Jean Monnet “Department of European Studies”), what is the value of the courses and qualifications awarded? (Value for Switzerland and possibly, if known, for the European Union).
  3. Until when such economic subjects will be able to use the term “degree” in their offers – a term that is undoubtedly linked to the concept of “university” – generating doubts and confusion?
  4. What is the current situation in Ticino regarding self-styled university (or tertiary) level training offers? Are there any ongoing proceedings?
  5. In the mind of the Council of State, is this a growing phenomenon (perhaps favored by the generalization of online training offers)?
  6. What could be the risks or inconveniences for potential customers of similar economic operators? What should you pay attention to (e.g. terminology used)? To whom should “suspicious” situations in this area be reported?
