A cruise ship rescues 12 Cuban rafters missing since December in Mexico

Twelve of the 13 rafters who left the Island from Ciego de Ávila on December 19 are in Mexico. The one who is missing is Raúl Martínez Torres, informs 14 intervene Osniel Hernández, a person close to one of the families, who states that the Mexican authorities know nothing.

“The family is devastated not knowing what happened to Raúl,” says Hernández, who explains that one of the Cubans contacted his family on the island and assured them that “everyone was fine,” although some required medical attention.

According to the Mexican Navy, a group of 12 Cubans was received. The missing person was not informed if he died on the voyage.

The group was rescued this Monday by the cruise ship Norwegian Prima, which left Texas bound for the Caribbean. According to information from the crew, they located the raft 200 nautical miles from Cancún.

In accordance with the protocols, the cruise ship reported to the Seventeenth Naval Zone and agreed to disembark the Cubans in the port of Mahahual, in the south of Quintana Roo. The Mexican sailors sent doctors from the Chetumal Naval Hospital to treat the rafters.

The Cubans were handed over to Immigration agents, who took them to the headquarters located in Chetumal (Quintana Roo). The identified group is made up of Yanniel London Ge, Lisandra Isaac López, Yorjander López Rovero, Dianelys Sardiña Leyet, Okel Linares González, Yunier Azcuy Santana, Deny Hernández and Miladis, whose last name is unknown, in addition to three other unidentified people.

The raft in which the migrants were found suffered a breakdown and was left adrift, it was detailed through the YouTube channel Child reporting a crime.

The deportation of the rafters is not foreseen, since the Administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador suspended the assisted returns of migrants from the Island last November. According to the lawyer José Luis Pérez the decision is due to the high cost of returning a person. to their country of origin.

Cuba accepted the returns of its compatriots starting in October, as long as the travel expenses were covered by the Government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “There is a cost of 4,000 pesos (237 dollars) for each migrant,” said the lawyer.

While the deportation flights to Havana were underway, Mexico used the services of the airline Viva Aerobús. In total, it transported 435 Cubans in five connections.
