The Croatian city of Legrad, located in the north of the country, was a very important center in the past. However, since the disintegration of Austria-Hungary, it has been declining more and more. “We have changed into a border town with little transport connections to other places. Since then, the population has been declining,” explained Mayor Ivan Sabolić.
Currently, about 2,250 people live in the town, which is half of the people who lived there 70 years ago. Legrad therefore decided to offer for sale 19 empty houses for one kuna (3.4 crowns). The offered properties are in various condition, some do not have windows or doors and the walls are covered with mold.
However, the offer also has its conditions. The new owner must be financially solvent (able to pay) and must not be more than 40 years old. At the same time, he must commit to staying in the city and living there for at least 15 years.
According to the portal Dnevnik.hr there is a huge interest in houses and offers come from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Argentina or even Colombia.
