A Cannes Film Festival without Croisette… but no films: the official selection revealed

This year, everyone can award their Palme d’or “Smiled Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Festival. Obviously: no Croisette, no jury, and therefore no awards, because of Covid. On the other hand, many films presented to the selection committee (2067, a record). And this fierce will of the great Cannes manitou, and of Pierre Lescure (reappointed for a third mandate to the presidency), to never say the festival was canceled (” There was never any question of saying: goodbye and see you next year “).

The two men therefore presented this Wednesday evening, facing the cameras but in front of an empty Parisian room (curious atmosphere …), their official selection of films labeled Cannes 2020, which will be identified as such in theaters and at many other international festivals in the coming months.

No hierarchical classification, even if we notice anyway some major names, as Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch, shot in Angoulême with a crazy cast), François Ozon (Summer 85, which comes out on July 15), Maïwenn (DNA), Lucas Belvaux (Men), Naomi Kawase (True mothers), Steve McQueen (Lovers Rock, Mangrove) or Thomas Vinterberg (Druk)…

On the other hand, no news of By half a clear morning, the new film by the Nordiste Bruno Dumont, nor byAnnette, the musical by Leos Carax. As for Benedetta, highly anticipated and very sulphurous film by Paul Verhoeven with Virginie Efira, its release has been postponed to May 2021… For the next real edition of the festival.

Combined, we note that this selection has 56 films, of which 16 are signed by women (two more than in 2019), and 21 are French (eight more).

As he likes to surprise his world, Thierry Frémaux was pleased to announce that his list also hosted a comedy with Kad Merad (A triumph), a werewolf film, a (very) four-hour Japanese feature film, Laurent Lafitte’s first film (The origin of the world) and also the latest from Disney-Pixar studios, the very jazzy Drunk, which will be released on November 25.
