a beautiful room and an annex town hall

The Nicolas-Schmitt fireplace has changed its look! By the way, it is gaining ground by being called Espace Nicolas-Schmitt, still in tribute to the one who was once mayor of Garche, then deputy mayor of the village-district during the reunification with Thionville in the 1970s.

“This beautiful tool will animate Garche with dignity”, underlined the initiator of the project, Joseph Terver, deputy and municipal councilor from 1995 to 2020, during the inauguration this Saturday, November 27.

For this rehabilitation, the elected officials had imagined things on a larger surface. But proximity to the Cattenom power station requires, the plans have been revised downwards. The users of the room, associations and residents, will not fail to appreciate the improvements made to the site, bathed in light, and signed with the pen of the architect of the City.

Perimeter constrained due to the power plant

This facelift is accompanied by a novelty concerning the office of permanence of the civil status services. Mayor Pierre Cuny has announced that the place will consolidate its status as an annex town hall, by offering, from April 2022, extended time slots. Currently, reception is only on Thursdays, from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.

Deputy Brigitte Schneider recalled that for this project, the cost of which is 1.450 million euros, life has not been a long quiet river. The first orientation meetings had started in March 2018. A first outline was retoque by the Nuclear Safety Authority – no construction possible within a radius of 2 km around the Cattenom nuclear power plant -, forcing a review by two times the copy. The site was able to start in September 2020.
