A large black bear, caught on security cameras climbing into a pickup truck, is guilty of a series of car break-ins in the US state of New Hampshire, police said.

Police in the northeastern US city of Thornton released a video showing the animal prowling around a parked vehicle, before standing on its hind legs. use its paws to open the door and casually climb onto the driver’s seat. Officers said they suspected the bear was a serial offender.

The bear is still running

“In the past few weeks we have received reports of a bear […] who got into vehicles to grab food or garbage left inside, and caused extensive damage, ”police said in a Facebook post. “We’ve had cases of bears getting into cars before, but not like this,” Police Chief Kenneth Miller told the Boston Globe. “It’s unique”.

Kenneth Miller also told local television WMUR9 that the bear notably damaged the bumper of one vehicle and the front seat of another. Even without the compromising footage, there were some clues leading towards the furry offender, with a bear print being discovered at the scene of one of his rampages, according to the Boston Globe.

The bear is still at large, and local media say he hasn’t caused any other problems aside from his penchant for car searches. Thornton Police said they have notified New Hampshire fishing and hunting authorities, and called on the public not to leave any food or trash that could tempt the velvet-footed thief.
