True to the position he has displayed since the first of these allegations at the end of February, the powerful 63-year-old Democratic governor soon after again ruled out the idea of a resignation.
Assuring “not to be aware” of this new accusation, he reiterated that he would await the results of an independent investigation into these allegations, supervised by the Attorney General of the State, Letitia James, with undisputed independence.
“Let the investigation establish the facts, then we will see,” Cuomo said during a telephone press briefing called shortly after the publication of the new accusation.
According to information from the Albany Times Union, a newspaper in the state capital of New York, this new episode of alleged inappropriate conduct took place at the governor’s official residence in Albany and concerns an employee who is unidentified at this point.
If the latter did not file a formal complaint, her allegations were transmitted to the legal department of the governor and to the services of the state prosecutor, the newspaper said.
These new accusations continue to weaken the position of the governor, in power for 10 years and whose mandate expires in 2022.
Seen by many as a hero in the fight against the pandemic in 2020, Mr. Cuomo, one of America’s most influential governors, is now the subject of numerous calls to resign, including from his own Democratic camp.
Republican elected officials have initiated impeachment proceedings before the Parliament of New York, where Democrats are in the majority. Its chances of success are uncertain, with impeachment requiring a simple majority in the lower house and two-thirds in the Senate.
