Karel Fiala, Lemonade Joe and the star of musicals died

The radio report was confirmed on Saturday by Blahoslav Mikolášek from the hospital for the long-term sick in Vršovice, Prague. There Fiala spent the last years of his life.

Fiala celebrated his greatest theatrical success on the stage of the Musical Theater in Karlín, where he has been active for four decades since the 1950s. Tand for four decades there was perhaps no musical in which Fiala did not have one of the main roles. As a tenor, he played almost all the “boxers” and lovers, he liked Tony from West Side Story the most.

The fateful film role for him was Lemonade Joe. Until then, the little-known tenor suddenly became the star of the silver screen, followed by crowds of female fans.

But he also played Dalibor in the transcript of Smetana’s opera, he appeared in the fairy tales Dařbuján and Pandrhol and Labakan or the drama Martin Frič Flood, after Lemonade Joe he got the opportunity in front of the camera mainly on television.

He got into acting by accident

Karel Fiala actually got into a successful acting and singing career by accident. He was born in the family of a chimney sweep. When he could not finish high school during the occupation, he began to devote himself to his father’s craft.

However, shortly after the war, he exchanged the roofs for the Prague Conservatory, as the talented young man was noticed by Professor Ševčík from the Ostrava School of Music, who prepared him for the entrance exams. “If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t sing,” Fiala confided.

In 2013, he received the Thalia Award for his lifelong contribution to the musical.

Karel Fiala was very active but also in his old age, he still played tennis after the age of eighty-eight and enjoyed great family reunions.
