The head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Swiatlana Cichanouska of the candidate in the presidential elections in Belarus that although she had left her country, she was still making political statements, in his opinion “quite harsh”.
Cichanouska – he added – demands the continuation of strikes and protests. Lavrov also noted that Cichanouska is speaking more and more in English. In his opinion, this means that “addressee – possibly the main addressee – is westward” and that it could be an attempt to persuade Western countries to continue paying attention to the situation in Belarus.
According to Russia, it is “extremely prospective” dialogue on the reform of the constitution of Belarus. Lavrov said that such a proposal was made during his last meetings at workplaces by the President of Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
Belarus “you don’t have to impose any prescriptions” – assured the minister. At the same time, he said that Russia wanted to be useful to Belarus.
He reiterated that Moscow considers the present situation to be an “internal affair” of a neighboring country. We will not be opposed to any decision that will be taken by the Belarusian authorities regarding dialogue with their people he declared.
But when the West says that only Western mediation will be effective, everyone remembers freshly what it looked like Ukraine, where Western mediation made our partners unable to reach agreement – added.
The head of Russia’s Foreign Ministry spoke on Sunday at the youth educational forum.
In Minsk, however there is a march with at least tens of thousands of people who are still protesting against the official results of the presidential election on 9 August.
