Huawei suspends production of some chips due to US sanctions

Huawei will no longer be supplied with chips for its smartphones because of the sanctions

Chinese telecom giant Huawei has announced that production of Kirin chips for its high-end smartphones will cease on September 15 due to US sanctions, stressing that this represents a “huge loss” for it.

During a technology industries forum, Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong said on Friday that production of Kirin 9000 chips would cease from September 15, when Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) manufactured them using components. Americans having stopped taking orders from Huawei, fearing repercussions.

Huawei does not have the capacity to manufacture the chips used for its high-end smartphones in-house.

“Huawei’s smartphones are not supplied with chips, therefore the delivery volume this year is a little less than 240 million units (produced in 2019),” Mr. Yu said. “For us it is a huge loss “.

Huawei – the world’s largest producer of telecoms equipment – is at the center of the economic and geopolitical standoff between Beijing and Washington, which claims the Chinese telecoms giant poses a significant threat to cybersecurity.

In May, the US government banned suppliers around the world from using US technology to produce components for Huawei.

Washington has also launched a diplomatic campaign to isolate the Chinese group, which appears among the best-placed competitors in the 5G race.
