The mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, sent a letter to the students of the colleges and universities in the city on Saturday about the increase in the number of corona infections. The municipality urges students to adhere to the corona measures.
“Young people can also become very ill and suffer serious consequences from the virus in the long term,” writes the mayor. “In the past few weeks, several students from Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) have again tested positive. So we must do everything we can to prevent the virus from spreading further.”
The mayor points out to the students that some of them seem to have not adhered to the corona measures recently. “This makes the work of the GGD more difficult and ensures that the virus can spread even more easily. Of course that cannot be the intention.”
The measures cited by Aboutaleb are the mandatory 1.5 meter distance, which must be guaranteed both indoors and outdoors, avoiding busy places, staying home with mild complaints and staying home after a positive test result. Students are also called upon to take a corona test for mild complaints.
The mayor already went earlier this week in conversation with the presidents of student associations. Following this conversation, it was decided to start a campaign to make students aware of the dangers of the coronavirus. This campaign will start on Tuesday.
Face mask mandatory at busy locations in Rotterdam
On Thursday, July 30, it was announced that from August 5 moon cape duty applies to busy places in Rotterdam, but also in Amsterdam. The measure applies to everyone aged thirteen or older.
In Rotterdam, this applies to the shopping areas in the center (Lijnbaan, Meent, Nieuwe Binnenweg and Coolsingel) and the markets on the Visserijplein, the Afrikaanderplein and the Binnenrotte.
Wearing a mask is also mandatory in the covered shopping centers Alexandrium and Zuidplein. The Keizerswaard and Binnenhof shopping centers may be added to this.
