Municipal in Paris. Anne Hidalgo well ahead of the second round

Anne Hidalgo will most certainly re-stack for a new term as mayor of Paris. The socialist candidate came largely ahead of the second round with 49.3% according to first estimates. She is ahead of the candidate Les Républicains, Rachida Dati (32.7%) and that of the Republic on the move, Agnès Buzyn (13.7%).

The outgoing mayor (29.3% in the first round) notably benefited from the carryover of environmental voices. His list had merged with that of David Belliard credited with 10.8% of the votes in the first round. This allowed him to widen the gap with Rachida Dati. The latter gained ten points from the first round but that was not enough.

No miracle for Buzyn

Finally, there was no miracle for Agnes Buzyn. One of the reasons is the weak carryover of the voters of the dissident LREM candidate Cédric Villani (7.88% in the first round) on the former Minister of Health. For this second round, the member for Essonne had chosen not to give a voting instruction and had even maintained his candidacy in the XIV arrondissement.

This result is a big disillusionment for the party of Emmanuel Macron who harbored a year ago great hopes for this election. But the rivalry between Benjamin Griveaux and Cédric Villani then renunciation of the first after a sex scandal and finally the awkward statements of Agnes Buzyn after the first round were expensive.

Anne Hidalgo’s election will now have to be confirmed by the vote of the Paris Council.
