Inaugural Exhibition at National Museum of American History Highlights Career of Latina Journalists on American Television

Tijuana BC.- The Instituto Smithsonian inaugurates a bilingual exhibition in the National Museum of American History in Washington, which highlights the career of seven Latina journalists on American television.

These journalists include Ilia Calderón, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Mirós, Lori Montenegro, María Elena Salinas and Blanca Rosa Vílchez.

The exhibit highlights how Spanish-language television stations provided women with opportunities for advancement that English-language stations did not, and shows how Spanish-language television has been an integral part of the history of broadcasting in the United States.

Educational materials

The exhibit also includes educational materials, such as a video series called “Latinas Talk Latinas“, which highlights the work of Hispanic journalists such as Jovita Idar Vivero and Martha Tijerinawho played an important role in promoting civil rights and education in the Hispanic community.

This exhibition sheds light on the impact of Latina journalists in the history of American television and their contribution to the visibility and voice of a large segment of the American public.
