President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Police Maj. Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. as the new chief of the Philippine National Police, replacing now retired Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. In his acceptance speech during the change-of-command ceremony led by the President, Acorda promised to continue his predecessor’s campaign to cleanse the police organization of scalawags while upholding transparent practices. He emphasized that no police officer should be involved in the illegal drug trade, and warned that rewards and punishment would be swift, decisive, and fair under his leadership. Acorda’s appointment was praised by lawmakers and colleagues for his experience, knowledge, and skills, as well as his well-meaning and idealistic qualities.
