The Al-Akhbar newspaper learned from informed sources that the military council file was the focus of Arab (Egyptian and Qatari) and Western (particularly American) interest.
The sources revealed that the US ambassador in Beirut, Dorothy Shea, had contacted Defense Minister Morris Selim to urge him to sign the extension so as not to paralyze the council.
The sources pointed out that Shea had previously contacted Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib regarding the matter and advised her to communicate with the defense minister.
