From this week, all emergency services of the Constance fire brigade are equipped with new firefighting clothing. After a long period of action, the clothing from the previous action showed significant wear; some items of clothing had to be discarded as they no longer offered adequate protection. A joint working group made up of volunteer and full-time ward members was set up for the procurement of the new fire fighting clothing.
The working group first defined the requirements that the new firefighting clothing must meet, surveyed the market and tested the various models in wear tests and in real conditions. As part of a Europe-wide tender, the new fire fighting clothing could then be procured with the support of the central purchasing office of the city of Konstanz. Thanks to the materials used, the new firefighting clothing has a significantly higher level of protection and is more comfortable to wear. Additional pockets make it easier to carry other devices such as portable radios or portable lamps. The new firefighting clothing also protects against viruses and blood thanks to a special membrane. The first members of the Constance fire brigade have already completed their work with the new protective clothing and were able to convince themselves of the comfort and high functionality. The new color scheme is still unusual: From now on, the Constance fire brigade will present itself in a sand color instead of dark blue. On the one hand, the light coloring is intended to help to better perceive our emergency services, on the other hand, it is intended to raise awareness of the cancer risk in the fire service. Large quantities of toxic and carcinogenic substances are released in the fire smoke, which contaminate protective clothing during firefighting. This soiling can be easily identified on the light outer fabric and the protective clothing can then be professionally cleaned. The health protection of our fire brigade members is thus significantly increased compared to the old dark blue protective clothing, on which such dirt could only be poorly identified. The improved protective effect and the clear coloring thus increase the safety and security of all emergency services.
