Folklore: Tourism recovers its rights at the Ballenberg Museum – Switzerland

On Tuesday 19 May, the Ballenberg Swiss Open Air Museum will open its doors. The necessary protective measures have been prepared and put in place in recent days. Visitors can expect a visit that is both secure and varied. Most of the 109 historic buildings on the 66 hectares of the museum site are open to visitors, while the 200 farm animals and demonstrations of craft work will bring the open-air museum back to life.

In accordance with the situation

The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum team had very little time to resume the preparatory work at the start of the season, install protective measures for employees and visitors and bring the operation of the museum into line with the situation related to corona. On May 1, 2020, the Canton of Bern definitively announced that the only open-air museum in Switzerland could resume its activities from May 11, 2020, like the other museums.

Ready for Ascension

“We are very grateful for the pleasant collaboration with the Canton of Bern and we were very pleased with the decision, which was taken without bureaucratic complications,” said the Chairman of the Foundation Board, Peter Flück. “However, an opening on May 11 seemed unrealistic to us since we completely stopped all preparation work in mid-March.” Thanks to the great investment of employees on the site, it is now possible to open before the Ascension, Tuesday, May 19.

A private recipe museum

“Hopefully being able to welcome more visitors during this year’s Ascension and Pentecost will do us the greatest good,” says Peter Flück. The corona pandemic and the postponement of the start of the season by six weeks has deprived the Ballenberg Open Air Museum of important and essential revenues in the very short term. The museum will therefore be open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday, May 19. (nda / The Morning)
