COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness varies with different virus variants

During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Netherlands started monitoring virus variants. This is done by means of whole-genome sequencing (WGS), a comprehensive method for analyzing a complete set of genetic material in an organism. Researchers have now shown that the risk of infection by beta, gamma or delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is higher among vaccinated individuals than with the alpha variant.

During the study, the researchers analyzed 28,578 viral sequences from individuals whose vaccination and prior SARS-CoV-2 infection status were known.

Course of the pandemic

“The data we have generated is useful to experts around the world, and is used in particular by RIVM to predict the course of the pandemic and the possible effects of certain preventive measures,” says Stefan Boers, medical molecular microbiologist. the LUMC.
