The Russian state channel Russia-1 offered its viewers a scene described by BFMTV as “surreal”. Presenters have indeed imagined, sometimes laughing, a nuclear strike on New York with the new intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat. And to ensure that the American city of 8 million inhabitants would be “completely destroyed”.

This sequence comes after Moscow announced on Wednesday the first successful test firing of a Sarmat missile, a new generation weapon with very long range.

The captioned Russian TV scene was shared on Twitter by Julia Davis, an American journalist who created ‘The Russian Daily Monitor’, a Russian news outlet. “Could you imagine one of our most famous presenters laughing at the idea of destroying a city?” she commented.

The Russian presenters were discussing the new missile when one of them launched: “We have only one target, the territory of the United States”, prompting laughter. “If 7.5 megatons were delivered to the territory of our so-called partner, then targets like New York City, a cool city, would be wiped off the map, completely destroyed, with a single missile. BFM TV note however that the Pentagon had deemed the first firing of the Sarmat to be only a routine test and that it posed “no threat” to the United States or its allies.
