The Greek-flagged bulk carrier Sea Champion arrived on Tuesday in the port of Aden, in southern Yemen, after suffering a missile attack in the Red Sea. In accordance with Reuters, this attack is likely to have been launched “accidentally” paccording to Reuters citing military and naval sources.

The US Joint Chiefs of Staff for the Middle East (CENTCOM, “Central Command”) announced in the early hours of the morning that the Houthis had fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) at the Sea Champion. He added via X that one of the missiles exploded “near the ship”, causing only “minor damage”.

Earlier, according to APE, the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy informed that the missile fell into the sea, at a distance of about 15 meters from the ship, as a result of which it simply “broke a window”. The Sea Champion, according to Reuters, is a ship of American interests, which transported corn from Argentina to Aden, docked and has begun unloading 9,229 tons. According to the CENTCOM statement, the ship has delivered humanitarian aid to Yemen 11 times in the past five years. Part of the cargo will then be transferred to the Houthi-controlled port of Hodaida to offload another 31,000 tonnes or so.

A Reuters source at the Hodaida Port Authority, who asked not to be named, said the attack on the Sea Champion was accidental. The Houthis have so far not reacted publicly.
