On Thursday 23 June at 12.56, the police received a report of a child who had been injured in a tractor accident on a farm in Melhus. Local crisis team was alerted and rushed to the scene.
The child was transported to St. Olav’s hospital by air ambulance, but died of his injuries on Thursday night.
A man is charged in the case, on the basis of coercive measures. The police confirm that there is a family relationship between the accused and the child.
– That the man has formal status as the accused is standard routine in such a case. I want to repeat that this is a deeply tragic accident and our main focus is the care of those involved and relatives, says police attorney Gørill Gyllan in the press release.
Do not know if witnesses were present
In a conversation with VG on Friday morning, the police attorney says that the investigation is in full swing.
– The police are now investigating the case to map the circumstances. Technical investigators have been on the scene. They did a thorough job yesterday and will probably go back today for more examinations and reconstruction, says Gørill Gyllan to VG.
– We have not conducted interrogations. We are unsure whether there were witnesses to the incident or whether only the affected person and the child were present. No conversation has taken place with the accused.
Maintaining the main focus
Gyllan further says that a routine blood sample was taken from the accused man yesterday. This automatically triggers that he gets the status of the accused in the case.
– This is a deeply tragic accident. Our main focus is taking care of those involved and relatives, the police attorney emphasizes.
– Why are you unsure if there were witnesses?
– The message from AMK was that a person has driven a tractor. The investigation is ongoing to reveal whether there have been witnesses present. Here we have a parallel run with investigation and care of someone who is in deep grief and shock. There are many considerations that must be taken into account, Gyllan answers.
On-duty lawyer Tina Værnes did not want to comment on what the person is specifically charged with on Thursday, but stated that it was a violation of the Road Traffic Act.
The crisis team in Melhus municipality follows up and takes care of relatives.
– Affects the whole municipality
– This is absolutely awful and incredibly sad. We have been out with a psychosocial crisis team, and focus on family and relatives. Our thoughts go to them, says mayor Jorid Jagtøyen (Sp).
The two-year-old is said to have been from a family established on a farm in the municipality.
This is the second time in three weeks that someone from the municipality with around 17,000 inhabitants dies in an accident with a tractor.
It hurts the local community, says Jagtøyen.
– This is a two-year-old, at the very beginning of his life. This characterizes the whole municipality.
