Coronavirus drops very slowly in Occitania

Update on the evolution of the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic Update on the evolution of the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic with a decline much slower than the rise and a screening campaign that was developed.

Since the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic peaked on April 6, hospitals have seen the number of people hospitalized decrease. But this decline is slow and somewhat erratic. The latest bulletin from the Regional Health Agency shows that there are still 729 people in hospitals in the region today, exactly the same number as yesterday. The steeper the increase, the slower the decline. During the last 9 days of increase, the coronavirus had led 368 people to be hospitalized. Since the peak, it has taken 20 days to descend 336 people. The decline took almost 3 weeks to clear 9 days of increase. The evolution of the number of people taken in intensive care follows the same rhythm. At this rate, the drop will be long and will spread well beyond the announced date of start of the deconfinement.

Screening campaign intensifies

Since April 1, 52,693 tests have been performed ensures the ARS Occitanie. Tests in hospitals, in establishments receiving a fragile public and in nursing homes in the region. Nursing homes are particularly affected by the coronavirus with infections reported in 240 of them and already 139 deaths reported by the ARS. Public Health France specifies that it is a question of deaths of elderly people who tested positive for COVID-19, but also of elderly people who could have symptoms without having been tested before their death.

Tests carried out by public and private laboratories in the region which are ramping up with currently more than 3000 tests per day. The objective is to reach 15,000 tests per day in Occitania before May 11 – the day announced for the end of confinement – out of the 700,000 announced by Santé Public France at the national level. To achieve this objective, the Director General of ARS and the Prefect of the Region request the departments and their non-medical laboratories to contribute to this screening strategy.
