New York: a police officer killed and another injured during an intervention

A 9-1-1 call about a domestic dispute turned tragic Friday night in New York’s Harlem neighborhood.

A police officer was shot and killed and another officer was seriously injured following a shooting.

Around 6:15 p.m., the police were called to an apartment because a woman claimed to be in the middle of an argument with her son.

When they arrived, the police met the mother and another of her sons. Two officers then went to a room in the back of the dwelling where a suspect was waiting for them, according to New York Police Department Chief of Detectives James Essig.

When they entered the room, the two police officers were reportedly the target of numerous shots. One of the officers, Jason Rivera, 22, was fatally injured. The other, Wilbert Mora, 27, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

The suspect, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil, then allegedly tried to flee, but was shot in the head and arm by the third officer at the scene. The 40-year-old is in critical condition in hospital.

Since the beginning of 2022, five police officers have been shot in New York.

On Twitter, the mayor of the metropolis, Eric Adams also deplored the death of agent Jason Rivera.

Eric Adams called the shooting “an attack on the children and families of the city.” “It’s our city against the killers,” proclaimed the mayor of New York.
