Ovation and victory in the temple of music

The 1,200 years since the consecration of the first altar of the Oviedo cathedral deserved a concert according to this millennial anniversary. And the truth is that the music lovers of the capital of the Principality, who with almost an hour in advance had already taken the Plaza de Alfonso II el Casto and who packed the Sancta Ovetensis, could not have a better taste in their mouths before the musical evening that had prepared the Municipal Foundation of Culture. To this end, a cast of top-level artists came together, such as the soprano María José Moreno, the mezzo-soprano Ketevan Kemoklitze, the tenor Juan Noval-Moro or the bass Gabriel Bermúdez, to which must be added the Oviedo Filarmonía orchestra and the choir of the Polyphonic Chapel. All of them under the baton of Lucas Macías.

That it was a big night in the Cathedral was seen first. The long lines at the gates attested to this, the absolute crowds and a list of authorities in which there was a large municipal representation, with councilors such as Alfredo García Quintana, Nacho Cuesta and Luis Pacho. To give the event greater luster, the opening-fanfare “Locus iste”, by Guillermo Martínez, at the time the Cathedral organist, was premiered. It is a work commissioned by the Ciudad de Oviedo Musical Foundation that explores the different sound possibilities from three spatially separated instrumental ensembles: classical orchestra (main altar), wind ensemble (in the choir organ) and trumpet (in the right pulpit). Excellent results that the audience thanked with loud applause when, at the end of the piece, and satisfied by the performance of the orchestra, Martínez greeted the attendees between proud and excited.

The Mozartian “Laudate Dominum”, with an extraordinary María José Moreno, served as an aperitif to the “Great Mass in C minor”, also by the genius of Salzburg, of great demand for the entire cast and where the Polyphonic Chapel choir gave a I step forward with very successful numbers that were accompanied by an OFIL well directed by Lucas Macías and who was very jealous of covering the soloists at all times.

The result of this combination of solid performers, great composers and an emblematic stage was an unforgettable musical evening, which ended with the audience standing up, excited and dismissing the musicians with a loud ovation.
