The Cave Where the Last Neanderthal Man Was Found, Its Contents Shocking

GIBRALTARArchaeologist discovered a secret cave chamber in Gibraltar that was covered in sand for about 40,000 years. Scientists estimate this is the last secret cave chamber where Neanderthals lived.

“Given that the sand that seals the chamber is 40,000 years old, the cave must be older, possibly where Neanderthals lived in Eurasia from about 200,000 years ago,” Clive Finlayson, director of the National Museum of Gibraltar, told reporters. Live Science.

The cave was discovered when Finlayson’s team studied the area, finding a hollow like a room. After climbing with difficulty, they finally found a 13 meter long cave.

Along the surface of the cave chamber, the researchers found the remains of wild animals, such as lynx, hyena and griffon vultures. “We also found a large whelk, a type of sea slug that was probably brought into space by Neanderthals,” the archaeologists said in a statement.

After digging, the team found some relics Neanderthal in the cave. “We found a 4-year-old Neanderthal milk tooth,” he said.

Researchers have found ample evidence of Neanderthal presence in the cave, called the Gorham Cave Complex, including carvings that may be the work of early Neanderthal art.

Additionally, the findings suggest that, in this cave system, our closest extinct relatives slaughtered seals, plucking the feathers of birds of prey for use as ornaments and scrap tools, Live Science previously reported.

For scientist speculates that this cave system may have been one of the last places Neanderthals lived before they went extinct around 40,000 years ago.
