The baby news comes from the mountains of central Sri Lanka, where the mother elephant lives in an orphanage. The father is 17-year-old elephant Pandu. Video footage shows the newborn animals eating leaves under the watchful eye of their mother. The park has not yet announced the names of the animals.
According to experts, twins were last born on the island in 1941. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to the animals, is one of the country’s biggest tourist attractions. About 7,500 wild elephants still live in Sri Lanka.
Twins were also born in Thailand in 2010. Then there were two males.
