“It is a catastrophe. The worst is yet to come ”, warns Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez – Observer

At a press conference broadcast live via streaming, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez praised this Friday the “courage” of Spanish society, but left a warning, quoted by the Spanish newspaper El País: “Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come. Very hard days are approaching ”.

The number of diagnosed and deceased will increase in the coming days. Very hard days are coming. We have to get to the end of next week very strong. The risk is everywhere, but we have to make a greater effort in some places [específicos]. Very critical days are approaching, for which we have to prepare, ”said Sánchez.

The Spanish Prime Minister was speaking at a press conference on the evolution of the spread of the outbreak of the new coronavirus in the country, which already has close to 25,000 confirmed cases of infection and 1,378 fatalities.

The Spanish Prime Minister noted that “it is not fear that keeps us closed in our homes, it is courage” and defended that Spain decreed “the toughest containment measures in the world” to tell the evolution of the pandemic. “We adopted the most drastic and most restrictive measures in the world. We are aware of the social impact on citizens’ rights. Spain is among the most affected countries in Europe and the world ”.

Covid-19, Pedro Sánchez also noted, “is an infection that spreads with unprecedented speed and ease. We have been applying the strategy defined by the World Health Organization to contain the spread of the virus. We have to get the time needed for science to find effective treatments ”.

The Spanish PM also assumed that the last few days confirmed the worst possible predictions for the evolution of the virus: “In these seven days we have seen how the worst prognosis has been fulfilled and all Governments have taken extreme measures [por isso mesmo]. It is a catastrophe for which humanity was not prepared. It’s only been seven days, but they changed us ”. It was precisely seven days ago, on March 14, that Spain decreed a state of emergency.
