The use of digital technology to either rejuvenate actors, or directly resurrect them, has become more and more common over the last few years. And yet, as much as the directors put their hearts out for the achievements, they always tend to run into grimaces of displeasure that criticize the result and directly wonder about the artistic (or even moral) benefit of this practice. Sean Young in Blade Runner 2049, Will Smith in Gemini, Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher in Rogue One… Examples abound, and none have met with unanimous praise.
Much less was the most recent case: the reappearance of Mark Hamill like a Luke Skywalker fresh from Return of the Jedi in the last episode of The Mandalorian. In fact, it is powerfully reminiscent of when last year Martin Scorsese wanted to turn to digital technology to rejuvenate the actors of the Irish, and again it turned out that the deepfake It seemed much more realistic than what was seen in the Netflix movie.
