Seawolves winning streak breaks with second defeat of the season in Jena

Now it happened after all. The Rostock Seawolves suffered another defeat yesterday after seven wins in a row. With 79:86 (43:38) they lost to Science City Jena after a strong first quarter, but remain front runners in the 2nd basketball league ProA for the time being. This is mainly due to the fact that they have played more games than their competitors, who can catch up with the Rostockers or even overtake them with catch-up games.

Seawolves head coach Dirk Bauermann, who again had to do without Rain Veideman, Stefan Ilzhöfer, Ronalds Zakis and Nicolas Buchholz, analyzed: “We started extremely dominant and played very well. Then we took our foot off the accelerator a little. You can’t afford that against such a hungry team like Jena ”. In his opinion, the result is “one hundred percent okay”.

At the beginning of the game, there wasn’t much to suggest that the guests would leave the pitch as losers after seven unbeaten games. After less than five minutes, the Rostockers were already leading with ten points (14: 4) and increased the result to 29:16 by the end of the first quarter. Especially the playmakers Brad Loesing and Behnam Yakhchali showed their class and scored 23 of the 29 points. At that time, Jena could not find any funds.

With the beginning of the second part of the game, the game changed. Rostock’s litters found their way into the basket less often. Jena defended more aggressively and bought the table leader more and more the guts. By the break, the lead melted to five points (43:38).

Even in the second half, the Hanseatic city no longer found their variable and flexible attacking game of the first quarter. In addition, there were no more free throws. Jena moved away point by point. A similar picture as in the last two Seawolves games developed in the last quarter. There they were a few minutes before the end by more than seven points, were able to turn the tables both in Tübingen and in the home game against Heidelberg and win the games.

This did not succeed in Jena. The hosts let nothing burn in the final phase and deserved to win.

The second defeat of the season is no break for Rostock. Rather, the game showed what the Seawolves still have to work on. In particular, the consistency of the team that was newly formed before the season is still missing. Coach Bauermann sees his team still on the right course. “It’s not about winning streaks or who is first after eight or nine games. It’s more about who plays a good role in the playoffs in the end. I believe we are still on the right track, ”he summed up.

The Eisbären Bremerhaven – the only team still unbeaten in the league until yesterday – suffered their first defeat of the season against the Bayer Giants Leverkusen.

These are the current squad and coaching team of the Rostock Seawolves (as of November 30, 2020).
