Schools – Magdeburg – “School peace” talks with ex-Minister Wanka started – Education

Magdeburg (dpa / sa) – In Saxony-Anhalt, representatives of schoolchildren, teachers and parents have started discussions on the so-called school peace. Those involved agreed on dates and topics on Thursday, as a spokesman for the Ministry of Education said. The exchange will be moderated by ex-Federal Education Minister Johanna Wanka (CDU), who will also contribute to the content of the talks. Wanka lives in Havelberg (Stendal district) and, according to the state government, feels connected to her adopted home.

Education Minister Marco Tullner and Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (both CDU) had brought the “school peace” into being after an initiative failed with their attempt to enforce legally regulated personnel keys by referendum. They had started to collect signatures at the beginning of the year and were slowed down by the corona restrictions. Instead of the necessary 163,000 supporters, the organizers around the teachers’ union GEW and the Left Party were ultimately only able to show 77,000 signatures.

The Wanka talks are now intended to enable the interest representatives of parents, teachers and pupils to have an influence on future school policy. In addition to the pressing problem of the shortage of teachers and the absence of lessons, school structures, investments, questions of educational quality and digitization should also be a topic, as a spokesman for the Ministry of Education said.

Initially, rounds of talks have been agreed until February. The next meeting is planned for the beginning of December.
