98-Year-Old Woman Faces Eviction from Home After 59 Years, Lawyer Calls for Suspension | Latest News

At 98, a resident of La Rochelle has until August 16 to leave her home before being evicted with the help of the police. Justice claims 9,800 euros in unpaid debts, following a rent increase.

She has occupied the same house since 1962, in the district of La Pallice. A home that she may have to leave surrounded by the police, in less than a month. On July 10, a 98-year-old blind tenant received a letter informing her of her upcoming eviction, which could take place from August 16. The letter was followed by a summons to the police station to explain to him the terms of his expulsion, a procedure which his lawyer protests against.

The case of this woman is typical of mind-blowing institutional violence.

The latter seized the execution judge, to request a three-year suspension of expulsion, as provided by law in the case of vulnerable people. He made a call on his Facebook page to his colleagues from all over France to join him in this procedure, the hearing will take place on July 27.

9,800 euros in unpaid bills

His client would no longer pay all of his rents for ten years, following an increase. A removal of the ceiling increasing the rent from 450 to 900 euros, which the old lady would have signed without really understanding it, according to Me Drageon. The owner had therefore taken her to court in 2018 and won her case, a judgment confirmed on appeal in November 2020 by the Court of Appeal of Poitiers, which terminated the lease.

But the tenant would not have any alternative accommodation to date. Her eviction letter, sent by the prefecture, directs her to 115, the emergency number for homeless people. Questioned by AFP, the prefecture of Charente-Maritime justifies the method.

In 2020, we note the vulnerability of this lady and we set up social support until the end of 2022. Two accommodations were offered to her, she refused them.

Proposals indeed refused “because located 10 km away, and upstairs. But this lady can’t climb stairs and like many blind people, she has a phobia of elevators. This is confirmed by his doctor. My client understands that she has to leave, but has not yet found a solution that suits her”, his lawyer justifies himself.

The deputy of Charente-Maritime Olivier Falorni questioned the Minister of the Interior on Tuesday on this affair. Since then, the summons to the police station has reportedly been canceled.
