86-Year-Old Loses Husband to Corona, Receives Vaccine & Calls BBC | Abroad

Gill Rogers last saw her husband alive when it was mid-March 2020 and the corona virus started to spread in Europe. Gill was not allowed to visit her husband in a nursing home for a long time due to the outbreak of the pandemic. She could not be there when her husband died at the end of April. “The death certificate showed that he was suffering from the coronavirus,” Rogers said in an emotional radio interview with the BBC.

Gill then had to spend most of the grueling period on her own. For fear of being infected with the corona virus, she was not visited by children and other family for months. Video calling with friends offered little comfort. “It was a terribly rough time,” said Gill in a broken voice. She hardly left the house in the past year and she also ignored shops and public transport.

‘Immediately yes’

Last weekend, she received a call from her doctor whether she wanted to qualify for early vaccination. She immediately said ‘yes’. “I have no doubts about this vaccine.” She says she herself contacted the BBC because she wants to convince doubters about the vaccine to get vaccinated.

The lady from Brighton, South England, is looking forward to going back to shopping and catching the bus as soon as possible. She hopes to embrace her family again in about a month, when she also receives the second injection of the Pfizer vaccine.

Even now that the first Britons have been vaccinated against the corona virus, the rules continue to apply that must contain the spread of the virus. “The virus is still deadly. We must obey the rules while we distribute the vaccine, ”Health Secretary Matt Hankock told the BBC.
