[이코노믹리뷰=황진중 기자] In the second quarter of this year, the number of people infected with AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in China increased by 100,000 in one year to 820,000.

China’s state-run media Xinhua News Agency reported on the 30th, citing an official from the Ministry of Health, “the number of AIDS-infected and HIV-positive patients increased by about 14% compared to the same period last year as of the end of June.”

The number of AIDS and HIV-infected patients in China increased by 40,000 in the second quarter of this year alone. Of these, 93.1% were confirmed as sexually transmitted infections.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, unlike before, cases of AIDS/HIV infection caused by blood transfusions in China have approached’zero’.

In China, in the 1990s, tens of thousands of villagers, including village residents, were infected with AIDS after transfusions of HIV-contaminated blood in the area of Henan Province. In 2015, a 5-year-old girl who received a blood transfusion during heart disease surgery was infected with HIV.

Since 2003, the Chinese government has promised a universal approach to related treatments as a way to solve the AIDS and HIV issues.
