8 Signs of Heart Problems Other Than Chest Pain: Recognize the Symptoms

Jakarta

One of the most common signs of heart disease is severe chest pain. The pain of a heart attack is usually described as a feeling of heaviness, tightness, or pressure in the chest.

Moreover, chest pain that increases during activity but disappears when resting could be angina, which puts a person at risk of heart attack or stroke.

However, heart problems can also manifest in mild complaints that do not involve chest pain at all. This is because symptoms of heart or circulatory disease can appear in the stomach, lungs and even the legs.

Quoted from The Sun, here are 8 signs of ‘normal’ heart problems other than chest pain.

1. Feeling unusually tired

If someone works long hours or has trouble sleeping, the fatigue they experience may not be heart-related.

However, if you experience extreme fatigue without any changes in lifestyle or activities, this is a cause for concern.

According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), feeling tired all the time for no reason can be a symptom of heart failure and other conditions.

2. Feeling nauseous

Nausea is another non-specific symptom that can be caused by a number of different conditions. However, a person should be alert if they feel nauseous or vomit along with chest pain.

“If you have severe chest pain even when you’re just sitting around doing nothing and you also feel nauseous, it’s time to call an ambulance,” said Professor David Newby from BFH.

He added that indigestion-type pain or a burning sensation in the chest or stomach could be a sign of a heart attack or related heart problem, because the heart and tubes to the stomach are close together.

Meanwhile, the sensation of choking or tightness in the throat could be a sign of angina.

3. Discomfort in the jaw, back, or stomach

According to Professor Newby, a heart attack can cause pain to spread to a person’s jaw or back. The National Health Service adds that a person may also feel pain that radiates to the neck, arms and stomach.

Some evidence also shows that women do not always experience common heart attack symptoms. Pain in other parts of the body is also a danger sign.

4. Swelling in the feet and ankles

Symptoms of heart problems may also appear in the feet.

“Unexplained swelling, known as oedema, in the legs, ankles or abdomen, may also be a sign of heart failure,” says a general practitioner at Pall Mall Medical Dr M Adil U Khan.

Professor Newby warns these symptoms should not be ignored, especially if the ankle becomes very large. However, he emphasized that swelling can also be caused by medications such as blood pressure tablets.

Another symptom that can appear in the legs is a cramping sensation that grips the calf when walking.

This needs to be checked because it could be a sign of peripheral artery disease, narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart due to a buildup of fatty substances.
