VIVA Diabetes is a disease that does not cause symptoms when it first develops. Therefore, the disease which is also known as diabetes this, is called silent killer or a silent killer.

Because it does not cause specific symptoms, most sufferers do not know that they have diabetes. This causes diabetes patients to increase every year.

Doctor of Internal Medicine Consultant Metabolic Endocrine, Prof. DR. dr. Sidartawan, SpPD-KEMD, FINASIM, said that the prevalence of diabetes in Indonesia continues to increase.

“Basic Health Research Data (Riskesdas) 2018 continues to increase, from 5.6 to more than 10. The total number is now more than 10 percent,” he said during a webinar held by Kalbe and Nephrisol recently.

Prof. Sidartawan added that not many of those 10 percent knew that they had diabetes. That is, 30 percent who know and 70 percent do not know that he has diabetes.

“What we are treating are 10 million people who know, more who don’t know. Meanwhile, we are taking care of those who know it’s already difficult. So the numbers are increasing over time, while there are still many who don’t know,” he said.
