7-Year-Old Boy Attacked by Black Bear in Suburban New York

BEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A black bear attacked a 7-year-old boy outside his suburban New York home, and the boy was taken to a hospital even though his life was not in danger.

The attack happened just after 11 a.m. Tuesday outside a home in Bedford, 45 miles (72 kilometers) northeast of New York City.

Police Chief Peter Simonsen said the boy was playing in his backyard with his brother when the animal attacked him. The parents rushed to rescue his son, in an act Simonsen described as “extremely brave.”

Carlos Cano, the local fire chief, told the New York Times that the mother, who is a doctor, bandaged it up before emergency services arrived.

The bear was still roaming the area and was dangerous, North Castle police said in a statement. An agent shot him and they were able to take him for rabies tests.

Officials say the bear population is growing in New York state, but attacks on humans are not as common.

Last year there were three bear attacks in neighboring Connecticut, including a 10-year-old boy who was badly injured in his grandparents’ backyard in October 2022.
