7 ways. Jewish biographies in Hamburg

From 2015 to 2020 the Anne Frank Center implemented the project »› New Paths ‹. Prevention of Anti-Semitism «in cooperation with the Turkish Community Hamburg and Surroundings eV. The aim of the project was to develop and test new approaches and concepts for dealing with historical and current manifestations of anti-Semitism in the migration society.

In a peer education format, innovative biographical educational materials were developed together with adolescents and young adults. The young people researched the history of Hamburg’s Jews in archives, books and on the internet for many years.

The resulting materials »7 ways. Jewish biographies in Hamburg «contain the lives of seven Jewish people. Their biographies tell of self-assertion, of commitment, of dealing with oneself, one’s own religion and identity. They tell of many different references to Judaism and show the diversity of everyday Jewish life in Germany.

The persecution and extermination in the Holocaust as well as current anti-Semitism form important points of reference without portraying the protagonists as anonymous victims. Rather, the individual ways of dealing with things and strategies, but also injuries and losses, are in the foreground.

The material is designed for use in schools and educational institutions and is aimed at young people aged 14 and over. It is suitable for preventive work against anti-Semitism, for getting to know German and Jewish history of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as Jewish religion, culture and everyday life.

The learning materials »7 ways. Jewish Biographies in Hamburg «can be ordered from the Anne Frank Center’s online shop for a nominal fee of 3 euros (plus shipping). To the Online shop
