7 lifestyle factors that improve heart health and reduce the risk of dementia

Attention to heart and artery health reduces the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in old age, research has shown by a team of scientists in France.

The researchers studied data from 6,626 participants with a mean age of 73.7 years, the analysis focusing on different aspects of their lifestyle, reports the Press Association.

Seven lifestyle factors that improve cardiovascular health have been associated with reduced risk of developing dementia. These are:
1. Avoid smoking
2. Avoiding excessive weight
3. regular exercise
4. Consume fish twice a week or more often


5. diet rich in fruits and vegetables
6. Maintaining blood sugar at a healthy level
7. normal blood pressure.

With each “optimal value” the risk of dementia is reduced by 10%, the researchers said.

The study, led by Dr. Cecilia Samieri of the University of Bordeaux, France, is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Of all the diseases in the UK, dementia is currently the leading cause of death, so exploring factors that could reduce the risk of this devastating disease is key to defeating it,” said Dr Doug Brown of the organization. Alzheimer’s Society.

“We know that what is good for the heart is good for the mind, and this study supports this theory by showing that caring for cardiovascular health can help slow down cognitive decline later in life and reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Although this study did not examine whether participants had healthy hearts in the first part of their lives – which would have made fewer of them develop dementia later – everyone should take action from an early age. ” said Dr. Brown, noting the importance of a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption and regular exercise.
