The wife of Prince Hans-Adam II died on Saturday at the age of 81 after suffering a stroke at a hospital in Grab. “She died peacefully surrounded by her family,” the principality said.

During the national mourning, all flags will be flown at half mast. At events there will be a minute of silence first.

Princess Marie married Hans-Adam II in 1967. The couple had four children. For three decades she was president of the Red Cross of Liechtenstein.

The 160 square kilometer principality between Austria and Switzerland is with approximately 39,000 inhabitants one of the smallest states in the world and very prosperous. The country is a constitutional monarchy and the monarch can dissolve the government and parliament, among other things.
