Cologne (dpa) – Bundesliga soccer team 1. FC Köln recorded high sales losses in the corona pandemic and used up almost all of its own funds. “From March 2020 to June 2021, we lost sales of 66 million euros due to corona. The equity that we had painstakingly built up to 38.6 million euros in recent years has almost been used up,” said Finance Managing Director Alexander Wehrle in an interview of the “Bonner General-Anzeiger” (Monday edition).

As with all other clubs, the lack of spectator income made up a large part of the losses. But according to Wehrle, there were also losses in the areas of sponsoring, merchandising, catering and events. Attempts have been made to counter this with targeted measures, for example with profit participation rights. In addition, the three-time German champion took out a loan of 20 million euros in April, which is secured by a guarantee program from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
