Brazilian Health Minister Nelson Teich said on Wednesday in a press conference that the Government is negotiating quotas for vaccines for the coronavirus that have not yet been produced.

According to the minister, the idea is for the country to anticipate the race for the purchase of new drugs so as not to run the risk of suffering from possible exhaustion worldwide.

“One important thing is that we are talking to possible laboratories that will produce the vaccine, so that we can guarantee that, in case a vaccine arises, Brazil has a share, has a share”, informed the government official.

Teich first addressed the issue of a total and mandatory confinement, called a ‘lockdown’, saying that it will be an important tool in places that are in a “very difficult” situation in the face of the new coronavirus pandemic.

“The lockdown will be important in places where it is very difficult, with high incidence, high occupancy of beds, many patients arriving, infrastructures that have not been able to adapt. Then we will have a situation where we will really have to protect people “, stressed the government official.

“Will there be places where the lockdown is necessary? Will there be places where I will be able to think about flexibility? Yes. What I need is for us to stop dealing with it in a radical way, even so that we have peace of mind to implement the measures. in every place in the country, “said Teich, adding that his ministry has already completed the guidelines to help municipalities in decision-making.

So far, in Brazil, total confinement has been adopted in the metropolitan region of São Luís, capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão (northeast), which since Tuesday implemented the measure to contain the spread of the virus after the growing number of cases, that in that region exceeded 4,500 infections and 270 deaths.

The Brazilian city of Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, has also announced that it will enter compulsory confinement as of Friday, blocking non-essential services and the circulation of people.

Other states, such as Pará, will also adopt a similar measure in at least 10 municipalities in the region, including the capital, Belém, starting today, Thursday.

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) on Wednesday sent a report to the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro in which it recommends the adoption of a ‘lockdown’ in that state, to control the pandemic, according to the local press.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 260,000 deaths and infected about 3.7 million people in 195 countries and territories.

More than 1.1 million patients were considered cured.
