6.6 earthquake on Crete. Tsunami alert

CRETE – Earthquake hits the south of the island of Crete in Greece. The 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The epicenter is 118 kilometers south of Ierapetra, on the southern coast of the island. There were no casualties and no significant damages, authorities said.

The nearest inhabited area is about 90 kilometers away, the village of Nea Anatoli.

In Greece, earthquakes are frequent, especially at sea. Most of the time they do not cause death. The last bad earthquake, of magnitude 6.7, occurred on the island of Kos in the Aegean Sea in July 2017: two were the victims. The deadliest in recent years, with a magnitude of 5.9, occurred in the Athens area in 1999. 143 people died
