Early 2021: 5G phones cheaper

Chipset maker Qualcomm has made a pre-announcement for an even cheaper chip with 5G support. The manufacturer does not report many details yet, but that it is a device in the Snapdragon 4xx series. Current devices with a chip from this series cost a maximum of 200 euros.

What the new chip will cost exactly, is still the question. It will be the most affordable processor with support for 5G. The processor should be available to manufacturers at the beginning of 2021. Motorola, Oppo and Xiaomi, among others, have already indicated that they will use the processor. Affordable devices from these manufacturers are therefore expected in early 2021. Further details about those smartphones are also unknown.

Buy a device with 5G now?

The use of 5G is only partially available in the Netherlands and the real rollout will take years to come. For example, you can use 5G with all (large) providers, but the speed gain is still small. The technology not only ensures faster mobile internet, but also a more stable connection.

The use of the new network technology is reserved for devices with a special 5G modem. Such a modem can be found in more and more top devices, but also in devices in the middle segment.

If you already want to buy a device that is future-proof, you can do that from around 300 euros. For that price, you can already buy a device with the Snapdragon 765 chip, for example the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite. Other mid-range devices with 5G are the OnePlus North in Motorola Moto G 5G Plus.

Current high-end smartphones with the Snapdragon 865 processor on board also offer 5G support. According to rumors, the successor will get one much higher price. That must also be passed on to the consumer, which means that that type of smartphones will most likely cost even more.
