52,968 corona infections in September, largest increase in month | Inland

THE HAGUE

It is by far the largest increase in a month since the outbreak started. In April, at the height of the first wave, the virus was diagnosed in more than 26,000 people. In August, at the start of the current wave, more than 16,000 cases were added. It is true that far fewer people were tested in the first period of the outbreak. The actual number of infections will have been much higher than the number of reports at the time.

First infection

The first infection in the Netherlands was established on February 27. A man from Loon op Zand in Brabant was found to have contracted the corona virus during a trip to Italy for his work. He was admitted to the Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in neighboring Tilburg. A day later a woman from Diemen turned out to have been infected.

All infections have been recorded nationally since 13 March. On that day, the Netherlands had 804 positive cases. The virus was diagnosed in 180 municipalities, 175 municipalities were still corona-free. Just over two weeks later, on April 1, the number of infections had already risen to 13,614 and only the Wadden islands of Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog were still corona-free. Another month later, on May 1, the Netherlands had almost 40,000 corona patients.

In May the calm started after the storm. In that month, nearly 6,700 people were tested positive, in June about 3,800 people and in July about 4,400 people. The number of infections increased again at the end of July. A dip followed in the first half of August, but the number of corona cases has been increasing rapidly since the end of August. The number of positive tests breaks record after record.

Tilburg had the most infections in the early days. On March 13, 67 residents of the Brabant city had tested positive. After that followed Breda (53), Utrecht (26), Meierijstad and Uden (each 25) and Sittard-Geleen (23). Amsterdam and Rotterdam were then both at twenty infections.

On April 1, Amsterdam was the leader with 674 cases, followed by Rotterdam (458) and Tilburg (352). After that, Rotterdam took over the ‘lead’, with slightly more infections than Amsterdam. The difference with the rest of the country became bigger and bigger.

Amsterdam has had the most infections again since August. On September 1, the counter stood at a total of 6117 residents who tested positive. A month later that has more than doubled. Until Thursday, 13,365 Amsterdammers have been tested positive. The total number of positively tested Rotterdammers rose in September from 5,732 to 10,105. Schiermonnikoog is still the only corona-free municipality in the country.
