500,000 corona deaths worldwide: these are the focal points

Since the start of the corona pandemic, more than 500,000 people worldwide have died from an infection with the virus, according to US scientists. That came out on Sunday afternoon (local time) from data from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The world population is around 7.75 billion people.

Which countries are most affected

The number of infections confirmed worldwide on Sunday had already exceeded the 10 million mark for the first time. A quarter of the infections were reported in the United States, where the pandemic continues to spread rapidly. Most of the victims also have to complain to the USA, where more than 125,000 people died. Brazil was in second place with 57,000 deaths, followed by Great Britain with almost 44,000 victims.

The number of victims in the United States, a country with around 330 million inhabitants, is the highest in absolute numbers worldwide. However, relative to the number of inhabitants, the number of deaths is higher in some European countries. In the US, around 38 people per 100,000 people died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the UK, this figure is rounded at 66, in Italy at 57 and in Sweden at 52, in Germany at 11 and in Austria just over eight.

Ten million SARS CoV-2 infections

The number of ten million people infected worldwide is roughly twice the number of severe flu cases registered annually by the World Health Organization (WHO). The death rate in the approximately seven months of the corona pandemic roughly corresponds to the death rate from influenza in one year. Brazil recently reported almost 40,000 newly infected people and now has a total of over 1.3 million cases. The number of deaths there was given as 57,000. Russia speaks of around 635,000 infections and more than 9,000 victims. However, doubts are repeatedly raised about this comparatively low death rate.

The continent most affected by the pandemic is still Europe, where more than 2.6 million infections and almost 196,000 deaths have now been registered. The statistics for the worst affected countries, on the other hand, are led by the United States, where over 2.5 million people tested positive for the virus and 125,539 died.

In the US, the number of new infections has reached a new high since Friday due to the rapid spread of the virus in the southern states. Around 88,000 new infections were reported at the weekend.

The Hopkins University website is updated regularly with incoming data and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures of the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, however, the numbers have recently been revised downwards. Experts assume that the number of unreported cases is higher.

According to the WHO, there were 9.84 million known infections and 496,000 deaths by Sunday. The corona virus pandemic started around the turn of the year in China. The novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 can trigger the lung disease Covid-19, which can be fatal especially in older or immunocompromised patients.
