For almost a week now, cinemas in the country have been filled with viewers of the Vilnius city film festival “Kino pavasaris” – long queues at the box office, full cinema halls and the most interesting conversations after the screenings about the films they have just seen. Although there seems to be still time until March 27, it is worth planning the films you want before the end of the festival in advance – screenings are filling up fast. Which films should I get tickets for first, without waiting for the second weekend of the festival?
“I’ll be walking around with a numb head for about a week after the opening film of the festival. It’s hard to even try to understand,” marketing specialist Dovilė Filmanavičiūtė said about director Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama “Interesų zona”, which was awarded the Cannes Grand Prize and two Oscars. Advertising specialist and creativity teacher Tomas Ramanauskas also agreed with it: “A horror film in which horror is in every frame, but you can only hear and feel it. Although the action of the film takes place in Auschwitz, the director himself emphasized that it also takes place in the present. It will hurt.”
T. Ramanauskas also added Rodrigo Moreno’s relaxed, world-shaping comedy Delinquents to his list of favorite films (The Delinquents), in which, according to him, everything is a little off the mark: the unfulfilled promise of an action film, the forgotten beginnings of a detective, leaping love. “For three leisurely hours, a bank robbery, and desires for dreams, and nature, and freedom will flow in the stream. And maybe even a nap,” T. Ramanauskas did not hide.
About human compassion felt after Ira Sachs’s film “Labyrinths” (Passages), the viewer Kornelija said: “The director throws you into a world where the limits of decency become a relative concept. You can’t identify with or like any of the characters, but at the same time you start to feel sorry for them as human beings. Franz Rogowski, who played the main role, should also be mentioned separately – one day he will definitely be on the podium of the most important awards!”
“A feel-good movie!” – about director Elene Naveriani’s “Taste of Blackberries” (Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry) said viewer Victoria after the session. – About a 48-year-old woman who survives for the first time. The hall cheered, accompanied by that lightness, the playfulness of life, the adolescence that happened later. All about the summer of life that happened in the fall. And about choosing to be alone and cherishing your choice. I’ve already told all my friends to go see it and have a laugh!”
“Not needlessly controversial, not needlessly scandalous, not needlessly cruel and not needlessly human, Polish director Agnieszka Holland’s film provides everything that good cinema can provide, except a good time – about the drama “The Green Wall” (Green Border) said screenwriter, actor Jonas Braškys. – You won’t be able to take your eyes off it, but at the same moment you’ll keep wondering when the movie will end, because it will be harder and harder to watch. Is it convenient? No. Do you want to scream at yourself, Alexander Lukashenko or Andrzej Duda? Yes.”
Amelia, the viewer, after the film “My Favorite Cake” directed by Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha (My Favourite Cake) said at the screening that this film is 97 minutes of pure and gentle pleasure, richly woven with excellent dialogues and subtle humor. “Political, but very spectatorial feel-good moviesuitable for all occasions in life – going with a mother, friend, husband or even teenage children,” she shared.
Meanwhile, the viewer Inga was impressed by Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania’s “Olfa’s Daughters” (Four Daughters). “This film is one of the discoveries that surprised me. A film in which the borders of documentary and feature film interweave with infinite sensitivity, subtlety and organicity, which captures and immerses you in a sea of feelings, thoughts, attitudes, experiences, in which one moment you wipe away a tear, the next – you can’t help but laugh, the third you want to dance and sing, hugging everyone real and fake sister… Olfa’s two daughters disappear after joining ISIS. The director invites the actresses to join the rest of the family and play the missing daughters, and in some sensitive scenes, the mother. The story is really addictive, engaging and doesn’t leave you for long. A really great movie,” she said.
Algirdas Ramaška, the director of Kino pavasaris, also shares another recommendation. This time in his sights is the latest work of the French director Xavier Legrand “The Heir” (The Successor). “I believe that many remember his directorial debut “Sūnaus globa”, which was released in 2018. opened the “Cinema Spring” and became a favorite of the audience from the very first screening. After a 6-year hiatus, Xavier Legrand is back with a bang. Don’t let yourself be lulled, because he won’t let you go. I promise that the film will surprise you, make your heart beat faster, and in some scenes you will look for someone to hold your hand in,” A. Ramaška intrigued.
