40 percent of people over 55 have an e-bike in their shed | NOW

In 2019, four in ten people aged 55 and older had at least one electric bicycle in their household, the Central Bureau of Statistics reports (CBSMonday.

The electric bicycle is becoming increasingly popular among people over 55. One in ten Dutch people aged 55 or older rides an e-bike every day.

The e-bike is used even more often by elderly people between 65 and 75 years old. In this group, 45 percent have at least one e-bike at home, against 37 percent of 55 to 65 year olds and 36 percent of people over 75.

The electric bicycle has not yet replaced the ordinary non-electric bicycle. Almost 70 percent of the over-55s have one or more regular bicycles in the shed.

28 percent of the over-55s who never get on a regular bicycle, gave poor health as the reason for this. With the e-bike, that percentage is a lot lower, only 10 percent of the over-55s see health problems as a barrier to getting on a bicycle.

The sale of e-bikes has been on the rise for some time. 149,000 units were sold in the first five months of this year; 12 percent more than in the same period last year. 186,000 of ‘normal’ bicycles were sold in the first five months.
