32,581 positive corona tests, again fewer patients in hospitals | Inland

Last Friday, RIVM registered almost 35,000 new cases, the record number to date. This was partly due to reports of an earlier malfunction, as a result of which not all confirmed infections were properly registered. On Saturday, RIVM counted just over 28,000 new cases.

In the past seven days, RIVM registered 177,730 positive tests. That equates to an average of 23,245 new cases per day. This is the highest average ever. The old record is from Saturday, one day earlier. Then there were an average of 23,232 positive tests per day in seven days.

The rapid increase in the number of corona infections was already expected. The omicron variant is now most common in the Netherlands and has supplanted the delta variant. The new version of the virus is more contagious, but it may make people less sick. Still, the new wave could also lead to more hospitalizations in a few weeks. The cabinet will decide next week whether the existing measures should be extended or expanded.

In Amsterdam, 2,484 new corona cases were recorded. Rotterdam registered 1809, The Hague 1733, Utrecht 929 and Groningen 602.

Corona patients in hospitals

The number of people in hospital beds with Covid-19 fell by 11 compared to 24 hours ago. There are currently 1,470 corona patients in Dutch hospitals, according to figures from the National Coordination Center for Patients Distribution (LCPS).

Of them, 397 are being cared for in an intensive care unit, compared to 405 on Saturday. There are now 1073 corona patients in the nursing wards, 3 fewer than Friday.

13 new corona patients were admitted to the ICUs, compared to 16 on Saturday. 107 new patients with Covid-19 were admitted to the nursing wards, compared to 149 on Saturday.

The number of new corona infections has risen sharply since last week. Whether these high numbers of corona cases will also cause a new wave of hospital admissions remains to be seen. It usually takes about two weeks before an increase in the number of infections is reflected in the hospital figures. The omicron variant of the virus, which now causes most infections in the Netherlands, appears to be less pathogenic according to some studies.

deaths

The number of reported deaths continues to fall. In the past 24 hours, RIVM was informed that seven people have died as a result of their infection. Just because their death is now registered doesn’t mean they died in the past day, it can sometimes take a while for a death to be passed on. In addition, it is not mandatory to report that a corona patient has died, so in reality more people may have died.

In the past week, 123 deaths were reported, an average of more than 17 per day. That is the lowest level since November 3.
